Ela Ada

Ela ada is a Kerala born sweet dish. Very healthy as it is steamed after wrapping in a banana leaf. Very few ingredients are required for preparing this dish that too in a jiffy. So let's start :-)

You will need :- (for preparing 8 ela adas)
(serves 4)

Rice Flour - 1 cup (heaped)
Jaggery - 1/2 cup (powdered)
Grated Coconut - 1 cup
Kerala Banana - 1 no
Salt - 1/4 tsp
Cooking oil - 2 tsp
Water - 2 cups

Method

Boil water along with salt. Put rice flour in a saucepan and pour the hot water little by little and mix it well.

Make a smooth dough of it. Always add water little by little.

Now heat a saucepan with powdered jaggery and 3 tbsp of water. When the jaggery starts bubbling then, switch of the flame.

Now add grated coconut and chopped banana into the jaggery syrup. Use only kerala banana or else you can use ripe mango or jackfruit pieces. Adding fruits is optional, you can prepare this dish only with grated coconut.

Mix it well. So now the stuffing for Ela Ada is ready.

Looks yummy ;-)

Now take banana leaves and cut it into rectangles, wash it and heat it directly on flame. Heating the leaves is to make it foldable. If you don't have banana leaves then you can use parchment paper.
Grease the banana leaf with cooking oil.(No need to grease, if you are using parchment paper).
Take some dough (a big lemon size) and spread it using fingertips on the banana leaf/parchment paper. Wet fingers while spreading the dough.
Now place a tablespoonful of the prepared coconut stuffing on it.

And fold the banana leaf from one side, to cover the stuffing with the dough.

Press the edges nicely and cover it with the banana leaf and place it in the steamer.

Cook for 5 minutes and serve.

Yummy Ela Ada ready......
