Food presentation

Presentation is the last thing you do to a dish before it is placed on the table, but it creates the first impression. Cook play with ice to create ice sculptures and elaborate carvings to impress their guests (more of a business technique to attract people)..

An ordinary hostess can create great looking meals by following some rules that are explained below….go through them and let the guests stay “jaw-dropped” :-p

Always keep in mind the occasion and the people (invited).

It is best to garnish a dish with flavours that naturally complement the main ingredient. For example grilled fish can be garnished with lemon slices.

If it’s a simple dish, then do elaborate garnish….For example a simple grilled chicken breast can be garnished with some grilled vegetables and a dressing.

if it’s a complex dish with many flavours in it (like indian gravys and curries), then minimise the garnish. Like garnish a chicken tikka masala with chopped coriander leaves or dot the surface of the dish with some fresh cream.

Curries and gravies must go in deep dishes all other dishes which are not runny can be put on platters.

A cute watermelon basket filled with diced fruits attracts as much attention as a costly crystal platter.

Use hollowed peppers or tomatoes to serve dips or chutneys.

Dusting powdered sugar on a dark dessert and dusting coco powder on a light dessert appeals to both the eyes and the taste buds.

If it’s a kiddy party then go to the extreme of the garnishing…..pizzas with smiley faces, different coloured pastas in one pasta dish, smileys using whipped cream on the desserts all make the kids go mad on food…

Avoid putting any decoration that is not edible.

Brushing the edges of the plate with little oil helps the garnish to stay on place, especially the grated ones.

Good presentation can add a lot to the meal, but too much or too elaborate presentation can make it too good to be eaten….so make it simple and yummy….and fill the tummy…..:-p
