Paruppu (Lentil gravy)

Paruppu is a show starter.....when you eat sadhya, the first item they serve with rice is paruppu and ghee. You can have this with rice and potato chips. So shall we start!

To serve 4 you will require:-

Taur dal - 1/2 cup, boiled and finely mashed
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
Dry red chilli - 2, cut into 3 bits each.
Asafoetida powder - 2 pinch
Curry leaves - few
Onion - 1 small sized, finely chopped
Coriander leaves - few, finely chopped
Salt to taste
Oil - 2 tbsp

Method

Heat oil in a kadai. Put mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let it splutter. Now add dry red chillies and asafoetida powder and stir it for few seconds. Put curry leaves and saute.

Now add onions and saute it well till it turn golden.

Pour in the boiled and mashed dal and mix it nicely.

Add 1 cup of water if the dal is too thick or 1/2 cup of water if the dal is bit watery. Add enough salt and coriander leaves chopped and boil it for 2-4 minutes.

Serve it with rice with a spoonful of ghee.

We call it Mitti Dal (sweet dal) as we don't add too much of chillies.
